Module 3 · Staying at Home

Welcome

Welcome to the third module on ‘Staying at Home‘.

This module aims to help you support and get support for your elders to live the life they want. If that life is at home, we will either give you the information you need or steer you in the right direction.

These modules are designed to help carers. A carer is a person who provides unpaid practical and emotional support to someone with disability, chronic or life-limiting illness, mental ill health, alcohol or other drug dependence or who is frail or aged.

Carer Gateway/Care2Serve are here to support carers, offering free access to practical advice and support.

Call Carer Gateway and register as a carer – 1800 422 737 (press 1 at the menu).

We acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands and waters upon which we work, live, and sustain ourselves. This land was never ceded, and we acknowledge that the Tasmanian Aboriginal people are its continuing custodians. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.

We welcome, support and include carers who may identify as LGBTIQA+, carers with disabilities or from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

We value and respect the diversity of carers, their lived and living experiences, and recognise that carers are the experts in their own lives.

Module 3 · About 20 minutes

Home

This module is to help your elder to stay in their own home for as long as possible – if that is what they want. In most cases, staying at home and ‘ageing in place’ as it is referred to, is not only achievable but also encouraged.

Accessing government home support for your elder is one of the most important things you can do to help them stay independent. However, accessing this support not only takes time to get your elder into the system, but it also takes time to put the care and support services in place, so don’t put it off or leave it until a crisis no matter how reluctant your elder may be. Do it NOW.

This module provides a step-by-step guide to the support available and how to access it.

This module will take about 20 minutes to complete.
